Lateral restraint of bowing gable wall

Client: Private home owner
Location: Alexander Road, Windsor
Reference No: CS014

The gable wall on a privately owned semi-detached property was becoming unstable due to the lack of sufficient lateral restraint.

Defects

  • Unstable masonry
  • Bulging gable wall due to failed connections

Requirements

  • To fully stabilise the structure
  • Repairs to be fully concealed
  • To provide lateral restraint and secure the gable wall to the main structure
  • To ensure a cost-effective solution

Helifix Solution

  • Our Approved Installer used the Helibeam System to repair, reinforce and stabilise the masonry. Stainless steel HeliBars, bonded into channelled-out mortar beds with high performance HeliBond grout, secured the brickwork and provided horizontal restraint.
  • Lateral restraint was provided by externally installing Bow Tie HD ties. A 12mm threaded bar with self-cutting end, the BowTie HD is inserted through a clearance hole in the wall and driven through the first and second floor joists, connecting them together using the diaphram action of the floor. The tie end is then bonded into the masonry.

Benefits

  • Cost-effective, high quality and sympathetic stabilisation.
  • Rapid, non-disruptive installation.
  • Minimal disturbance to the building fabric and to the occupants of the house.
  • No unsightly external pattress plate.
  • All work was completed w ithin one day.
