The Edward Anwyl Building on the Caerleon Campus at Newport, part of the University Of Wales, was suffering from cracking to its brick panels. Investigations of the steel frame brick clad structure found that there were no wall ties in the cavity panels or any significant tie-in to the columns.
Repair specialist, Helifix Ltd, was able to provide a rapid cost-effective solution which secured the masonry panels and avoided potential future problems. Over 1,600 stainless steel ResiTie remedial wall ties, which are resin bonded at both ends, were installed on the three storey building. They were chosen because the skins of the brickwork panels had been constructed 'frog down', resulting in voids in the masonry. Strapping details were also installed to secure the masonry panels to the columns to complete the economical structural repairs.
